General Operations Manager

Field Operations & Operations Management



The General Operations Manager will effectively lead, direct and manage all activates related to facility operations for a Distribution Center that are related to overall dock and city operations to ensure continuous improvement of operational efficiencies while reducing costs and to meet or exceed customer expectations.  Maintain facility and equipment necessary for effective, efficient operations.



  1. Communicates company safety program enforces safety rules and compliance with all government regulations. Maintain a safe work environment at all times with a focus on preventing accidents and injuries.
  2. Interact daily with internal and external customers to deliver exceptional customer service to meet and exceed customer expectations and provide on-time and quality delivery of freight.
  3. Direct and coordinate facility operations between departments to obtain optimum use of equipment, facilities and personnel to meet customer needs.
  4. Oversee the implementation and adherence to production and cost control policies through proper staffing, training and supervision of employees. Coordinate efforts with Human Resources to recruit and source qualified applicants for operations positions.
  5. Maintain knowledge of applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA). Establish and maintain a good working relationship with labor by resolving problems in a fair and timely manner.
  6. Review and analyze operations reports in order to identify issues and recommend any necessary changes to ensure production goals are maintained to meet the highest possible customer satisfaction while minimizing operating costs for the facility.
  7. Ensure necessary resources of labor, equipment and time are available to all employees to allow maximum productivity of operations staff.
  8. Utilize independent judgment and effectively recommend personnel actions in accordance with company policy, procedures and contractual language.
  9. Manage work assignments, monitor performance and provide training on duties, policies and procedures.
  10. Utilize work method programs for training and education to motivate employees to improve performance and quality of work.
  11. Communicate clear performance expectations to ensure high-performance work environment and proactively provide specific, balanced and timely coaching/feedback to reinforce and encourage high performance and promote a culture of teamwork.
  12. Conduct performance reviews and focuses on development and career planning for their assigned staff.
  13. Report to the leadership of the status of facility projections of manpower and freight flow, progress on division goals and communicate staffing needs.

  7. Work Standards - Setting high standards of performance for self and others; assuming responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments or tasks; self-imposing standards of excellence rather than having standards imposed.


  1. Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics or related field or a combination of experience and education.
  2. Five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  3. Experience in the transportation industry with deep knowledge of operations and logistics.
  4. Effective organizational, planning and prioritization skills.
  5. Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated Leadership and supervisory capabilities.
  7. Must be flexible, willing to work any schedule, including weekends and holidays, in all types of weather


  1. Bachelor’s degree in transportation, business, engineering or related area.
  2. Knowledge of local applicable collective bargaining agreements.
  3. Knowledge of company policies and procedures.
  4. Safety/OSHA knowledge or certifications.



Environmental working conditions vary and employee may encounter vibration, noise, odors, and extremes in temperature and wind as well as exposure to varied weather, varied surfaces, sharp edges, varied lighting and confined and congested areas and occasionally exposure to petroleum-based products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, oil, and grease.




The position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and maintain balance for extensive periods of time. Seldomly lift up to 10 lbs. Ability to perform repetitive tasks; stretch, turn, twist, and reach overhead; bend, crouch, squat, kneel and stoop for extensive periods of time. The ability to operate a forklift, dolly, hand truck, pallet truck, carts, and other equipment is necessary for loading and unloading freight.
